4. Demonstrating How Overrated You Think A Musical Is

I suppose a load of people would choose Andrew Lloyd Webber for this slot, and my choice might be quite controversial. Frankly I think that this film (must admit I haven't seen the stage show) is all bluster, with some OK songs which are hugely over-done. People say that they just love watching films set in that era, but there are loads of others to choose from, not least ones from that time itself! To talk about the song briefly; 'Nowadays' has a fairly standard message which doesn't say anything particularly interesting other than how modern things are now, it has a bog-standard 30s-esque chord progression, and in this version CZJ's great performance is spoiled by Renee Zellwegger pouting through it. Bah.

3. Demonstrating How Underrated You Think A Musical Is

This is a song from the musical Spamalot, which came from the minds that brought you the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Saw the show a while ago, and immediately bought the sheet music, and my mum and I love singing this song far too loudly at home!

2. From Your Latest Musical Obsession

This is a song from Sondheim's musical vanity-project, Frogs. Unashamedly dealing with an inaccessible world (that of Ancient Greek drama), the show indulges in inaudible witticisms and crunchy harmonies. That said, the score is FANTASTIC and if you buy into the sound-world of the musical then you'll be hooked like I am. Lyrics can be found here.

1. From Your First Musical

I saw this at the Manchester Apollo Theatre in my early teens. A strong song, and not one of EP's worst, which is nice. There's so much nuance in the lyrics which just doesn't come through in her performance, and the electronic instrumentation has aged badly, but ultimately the song carries through.
